Tracking Competition

Welcome to the ISMAR 2012 Tracking Competition.

This is the fifth year that ISMAR is organizing a tracking competition. It is encouraging to see how computing, imaging and new algorithms are coming together to enable increasingly complex tasks on mobile platforms.

The chosen scenario for this year is the general manufacturing scenario in which a worker not only has to pick a list of items and but also to put them to appropriate positions on another item. The identity of these objects and their goal positions are only given by their respective 3D coordinates in the manufacturing area. The worker is required to determine the exact object to pick from a variety of similar or even visually indistinguishable objects. To correctly pick the right objects and assemble them together, the worker has to be guided by visually overlaying the current and desired locations of the object onto the worker's view. As the items are distributed over a large manufacturing facility, both local and global tracking methods are needed. For effective comparisons, various levels of difficulties will be evaluated.

Four teams have signed up for this years competition. On the first day they will have the opportunity to explore the test environment and use the associated markers for registration in order to build a scene / environment model. On the second day they will be given a shopping list of objects that they have to locate. They will have to find the objects, identify them and provide their location. This year there is a mixture of teams using laptops, mobile phones, regular cameras and RGB-D cameras. The competition offers a nice opportunity to compare different technologies in a challenging environment.
